Truck leasing: Silver lining showing

Posted on 15 December 2009 by Rhonda Flathman

Cost-conscious fleets may soon help boost the truck leasing industry. With new emission regulations driving up truck prices, fleets may give more thought to leasing equipment. With many still hampered from buying new equipment outright because of tighter access to credit, leasing offers an attractive option to stay on the cutting edge of new technology, while not cramping the bottom line. Also popular are contract maintenance services, which allow operations to keep equipment longer while reducing their costs of providing the upkeep.

Better days may be ahead very soon for the truck leasing industry for two reasons: emission regulations that are driving up truck sticker prices make leasing more attractive to truck fleets and fleets are still seeking ways to prolong the life of their equipment, which is boosting demand for contract maintenance.

“There are a lot of positives in the mix for the leasing business, though of course it all depends on how the economy behaves next year,” Thomas James, the new president & CEO of the Truck Renting and Leasing Assn. (TRALA), told FleetOwner.
